'During operations in the vicinity of POLYGON WOOD from 26th/29th September 1917, being the only N.C.O. left in a section of four machine guns, did, by his brave example and untiring efforts, stimulate the men under him, who were subject to constant shelling practically the whole period, and he was instrumental in a great measure in enabling these guns to respond satisfactorily to the S.O.S. when called on.'
