Embarked Brisbane, 1 May 1916.

Embarked Tel-el-Kebir on 'Lake Manitoba' and proceeded to join British Expeditionary Force, 1 August 1916; taken on strength by Pioneers Training Bn, Perham Downs, 19 August 1916.

Admitted to Delhi Hospital, Perham Downs, 18 September 1916; marched into No 1 Command Depot, 13 January 1917; marched into Pioneers Training Bn, Larkhill, 17 January 1917.

Found guilty, 15 May 1917, of being absent without leave, 29 January, to 18 April 1917:awarded 4 months' detention; forfeited total of 228 days' pay. Marched into Chelmsford Detention Barracks, Fovant, 24 May 1917. Released from detention with remainder of sentence remitted, 13 August 1917. Proceeded to France through Southampton, 13 August 1917; marched into 4th Australian Division Base Depot, Havre, 14 August 1917; marched out, 1 September 1917; taken on strength, 4th Pioneer Bn, 7 September 1917.

Admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance, 28 March 1918, and transferred to Casualty Clearing Station (asthma); to 20th General Hospital, Camieres, 29 March 1918. Proceeded to England on 'Ville de Leige', 1 April 1918, and admitted to 1st Birmingham War Hospital, Rednal; transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 11 April 1918; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 23 April 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on HMAT 'Gaika', 12 May 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 5 July 1918. Discharged as being unfit for military service, Brisbane, 24 July 1918 (asthma).
