'For marked gallantry during the attack west of Bellenglise, north of St. Quentin, on 18th September 1918. He led his platoon in an assault in face of heavy machine gun fire, from an old building surrounded by a hedge. Whilst Lewis gunners engaged the enemy he led the remainder of his platoon round the flank, and, after killing several of the enemy, took fifty-five prisoners and several machine guns.'
