Military Medal

'During the period 23/28th October 1917, near ZONNEBEKE, East of YPRES, Private NEWEY as a runner did gallant work carrying despatches between the Coy. and Bn. Headquarters which necessitated his passing through a very heavy barrage. After being partly buried and badly shaken by a shell he remained on duty. On a separate occasion when another runner was wounded Private NEWEY went out, found the runner, delivered the message and carried the wounded man in. He worked indefatiguably, and throughout set a fine example to his comrades.'
