'East of WYTSCHAETE from 9th to 14th August 1917 he was in command of a platoon, many of the men being under fire for the first time. His coolness and courage under heavy Artillery and sniping fire inspired a desire for emulation in men who were at first nervous. He furthermore guided and took charge of ration parties to front line in excess of his ordinary duties. This N.C.O. has the entire confidence of both Officers and men of his Company, for recent and past actions.'
